From garden vine to natural sponge
Grow your own luffa sponge gourds from seed. These vigorous vines produce gourds that can be left to mature and dry; once cured, the outer skin can be removed to reveal the fibrous sponge inside. It's a satisfying garden project with a practical finish for bath time or household cleaning.
What makes luffa fun to grow?
- A garden-to-sponge project: Watch the vines grow, harvest mature gourds, and prepare the fibrous interiors for use.
- A useful harvest: The dried sponge can be used in the bath or around the home.
- Seeds, not finished sponges: This product is a packet of luffa gourd seeds for planting.
Growing notes
Choose a warm, sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil and give the vigorous vines plenty of space and a sturdy support. Sow after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed, or start seeds indoors ahead of the growing season where summers are shorter. Water regularly as the plants establish. Allow gourds intended for sponges to mature and dry before peeling away the skin and cleaning the fibrous interior.
Imagine turning a climbing vine in your garden into a sponge you grew yourself. That's the little bit of everyday magic this packet is for.
